What should i read next? I'm between books. Yes, i know i should be working, but if i read nothing but scientific papers all the time my brain will collapse.

I finished reading The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield a few weeks ago (it was fun, by the way) and I've been in book limbo ever since. It's not a good place to be. My supply of back issues of The New Yorker is dwindling...

Help! I'm looking for something light enough to be restful but substantive enough to hold my interest and well written enough not to annoy me completely. Suggestions?

Also, I LARPED on national tv last night. WTF? I don't know whether to be grateful or disappointed that most of the bits with me were cut. (sigh... no little tree nymph...) In fact, i don't think i got any lines, at lunch or otherwise. I think i'm mostly grateful that i don't have to die of embarrassment... but i guess i'm a teeny bit disappointed too...

BUT my garb got a staring role. I thought the doublet (okay, mentalapse's doublet -- he helped make it too...) looked particularly shiny. And i made the cloak and flower crown that Jasmine had on, and the purple shirt that pantsie was wearing as well. *grin*

I also called the viewer vote thing -- very early too. I think i called it before the first episode even aired! Hee!

Does anyone have a laptop running Windows that i could borrow for a few weeks?

It needs to have at least:
PC Pentium 4 processor (or AMD processor with similar benchmarks)
Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system
256 MB RAM
40GB Hard drive

I would need it this weekend, next weekend and possibly for a week around Thanksgiving...

Seven random things about myself:

1. I don't remember a time in my life when i didn't know the story of The Hobbit. I was a hobbit throughout much of my childhood and, when i couldn't fall asleep at night, I would pretend that i was Bilbo Baggins waiting in the eerie silence at the mouth of the dragon's cave, deep within the lonely mountain. (This is, of course, entirely my father's fault.)

2. When i was really little my favorite color was red. Late in high school some time i decided i liked purple the most but i'm beginning to rediscover my love of red.

3. I'm still bitter that i didn't get to play Titania my senior year of high school. (Going into our senior year my friend and i discussed how, in an ideal world, we would do Midsummer in the fall so i could be Titania and then Annie in the spring so she could be Miss Hannigan. That these are the plays the director chose isn't that random -- we had some inkling that he would. But we had no idea that he would pass both of us over for our dream roles and cast younger students in a "show them they aren't entitled and recruit new players" sort of move.)

4. I'm still maliciously happy that the sophomore who did get the part of Titania flaked out and left the production without a major lead mere days before opening night. Ha!!

5. Winter is, without any doubt, my favorite time of year. I love the cold, i love sweaters and bundling up and i LOVE snow. (In an amazing bout of self-absorption I often secretly think that it snows just to make me happy.)

6. I get incredibly motion sick on swing sets but i love swinging on them anyway.

7. I actually like being tagged for these meme-y things 'cause i can then fill them out without feeling like i'm taking up more than my share of the lj bandwidth. I know that's silly but still...

My phone isn't working. It keeps saying "call failed" when i try to call out, even though it also claims it's at full connection strength. I tried going outside. I tried going down the street. I tried shutting the phone off. All to no avail.

The Verizon website says to try calling *228 but that call fails too. The website also told me to try "power cycling" -- turn off the phone by taking the battery out. That doesn't help either. If those things don't work the website says to call them. I can't call the Verizon help because my phone doesn't work.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Hoory for the return of Phoebe, the little green Saturn! I picked her up from the shop this afternoon.

Also, hooray for the shiny new sofa and love-seat that were delivered this morning. No more sitting on the floor (unless i choose to!) One step closer to having a visit-able apartment.

Finally, anyone need boxes (or anticipate needing boxes in the near future)? We have many and they are in very good shape. Depending on where you live i'll even bring them to you!

Anyway, since some of you have asked, my talk was okay. I was really nervous and talked really fast so it ended too soon.* But my work is interesting and i think people liked it, even if i maybe didn't underscore its significance as much as i could have. I only got one question, which was actually a little disappointing, but i think i fielded it well. All in all, it could have been a lot worse! If i had been more confident and poised it could have been a really good talk. I need to stop selling myself short!

Also mentalapse is an angel and gave up his entire long weekend to keep me sane and listen to me rehearse a dozen times. He rocks.

And now i need to get back to lab work and all the rest of my life -- everything i have been ignoring for the past week or so!

*Ten years ago i was winning prizes for public speaking! What happened???? I think MIT happened...

I should be happy, right? There is hope, right? I'm trying to focus on the gains in Congress but i just keep going back to the 7 additional states that approved bans on same-sex marriage. I just don't get it.

Still, I'm trying to be optimistic and so i thought i'd pass along this e-mail from one of my favorite glass-half-full types, my brother Paul:

Hi there friends,

I was struck by a hopeful chord this morning and I just wanted to share.

As you may know, Mer and I just got a little bundle of fur, Bean. Bean
is wonderful. A happy and healthy little pup. She is normally full of
way too much energy, but a few weeks ago, her tummy was really off and
she was kind of down. We tried switching her food, giving her yogurt,
etc... but no success. It turns out that she got into something she
shouldn't have and contracted a case o' worms. Yuck.

So, why am I sharing this, you ask? Well, here's the thing. Today is
the start of her final medication to rid the worms and the significance
of it happening on this very day cannot be overlooked.

Like Bean's poop, our world is not as healthy as it could be. Our
environment is severely at risk, our personal rights are endangered if
not already gone, torture is now legitimized, minimum wage is stagnant,
etc, etc... and thats not even to discuss the atrocious foreign policy
disasters that have cost thousands and thousands of human lives, and
billions and billions of dollars that could be aiding instead of
destroying.

But I am really hopeful today. Today is a chance for change Bean is
taking meds today that will begin to rid her little belly of those nasty
parasites. And today, YOU TOO can rid nasty parasites from the deep,
dark bowels of government. Please vote. Please urge your friends,
family, co-workers, neighbors, etc... to vote as well, and let their
voice be heard! And maybe, just maybe, (you know voting fraud, machine
tampering/hacking, voter suppression, etc...aside) real change will
actually begin today.
