07:08 pm - Phew!
Thanks, everyone, for all your warm wishes! I really appreciate it!

Anyway, since some of you have asked, my talk was okay. I was really nervous and talked really fast so it ended too soon.* But my work is interesting and i think people liked it, even if i maybe didn't underscore its significance as much as i could have. I only got one question, which was actually a little disappointing, but i think i fielded it well. All in all, it could have been a lot worse! If i had been more confident and poised it could have been a really good talk. I need to stop selling myself short!

Also mentalapse is an angel and gave up his entire long weekend to keep me sane and listen to me rehearse a dozen times. He rocks.

And now i need to get back to lab work and all the rest of my life -- everything i have been ignoring for the past week or so!

*Ten years ago i was winning prizes for public speaking! What happened???? I think MIT happened...

05:45 pm - Election poop.
I should be happy, right? There is hope, right? I'm trying to focus on the gains in Congress but i just keep going back to the 7 additional states that approved bans on same-sex marriage. I just don't get it.

Still, I'm trying to be optimistic and so i thought i'd pass along this e-mail from one of my favorite glass-half-full types, my brother Paul:

Phew. What a crazy couple of weeks! I'm more or less back to the real world. I'm going to try to post my thoughts on Ali's Wedding and the Quest game and the Soceity for Neuroscience meeting soon. But for now, mindless memeishness!!!

01:17 pm - Um, where am I again???
The past week has been dizzying. In the past 7 days i have gone from my childhood home (Alicat's wedding was beautiful, by the way!) to full-tilt lab focused poster panic to the dark and dangerous fantasy realm of Overlook (the Quest game was wonderful too, though i'm craving some closure) to the airport (not so wonderful, my flight was delayed), to the Neuroscience conference in Altanta.

I am sorta not sure who i am supposed to be right now. But all will be well. I don't present my poster 'till Wednesday so until then i can relax and enjoy the conference. Or pretend i'm still in a fantasy world. Actually there are some strange similarities between the unreality of Quest and the unreality of SfN, the lack of sleep being high on the list.

Now, to the poster hall! Maybe i'll learn something! Or at least remember why it was i decided to do this in the first place...

02:01 am - Woo Hoo! (or, at least, it's a start...)
With all the discussion of Pluto's fall from planetary grace yesterday, we in friends-list-land seem to have missed a far more important news story: the FDA has approved Plan B for over-the-counter sale!

Of course, the drugs will be kept behind a counter and wont be sold any place without a pharmacist on staff... and teenagers still won't be able to buy it without a script...

But it's a start.

10:24 pm - Shocking result... (thanks Merinslips!)
You scored as III - The Empress. The Empress is a maternal symbol. She is the mother figure who loves, nurtures and protects.
She will protect you, she will always be there when you are in trouble. When you fall over and graze your knee, the Empress will kiss it better.
Yet she is not a weak figure. Her compassion is strength. If her children are threatened she will stop at nothing to protect them. If well aspected in a Tarot spread, the Empress can symbolise security, protection and unconditional love. If badly aspected it can represent over-protectiveness, fear of risk taking and refusal to face the real world.

11:38 am - Assorted thoughts on the past few weeks...
I'm back in Massachusetts -- I got back this morning. The past few weeks have been exhausting but, while it's nice to be back, I'm not sure how I feel about returning to normalcy. I had hoped for some sort of closure at the Memorial Service but instead it felt frantic and fragmented and not at all cathartic (though people less involved assured me it was lovely).

We also started breaking down GR's apartment, distributing the knick-knacks and furniture and jewelry. I find myself wanting to hold on to everything, though much of it isn't my taste. We also found she had folders for each one of us containing cards and letters and other sorts of things. My folder had, among other things, an e-mail home from my first week in college, programs from every play i had ever been in, tons of my poetry, a copy of my Bat Mitzvah invitation and a note card with the speech she gave when she presented me with my grandfather's prayer book, the lit mag I edited in high school, a story i wrote in elementary school -- even a sticky note with my GRE scores jotted down.

I still just don't believe she's gone. She was so vibrant and involved and such a part of our lives and now, suddenly, she's not there.

My pirate name is:

Calico Jenny Flint

Often indecisive, you can't even choose a favorite color. You're apt to follow wherever the wind blows you, just like Calico Jack Rackham, your namesake. Like the rock flint, you're hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you're easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!
